What is a robocall?
A robocall is a rerecorded message or text you receive unsolicited. Another form of a robocall is a ringless voicemail. Ringless voicemails allows messages to be left on your voicemail without your phone ever ringing.
It depends- most robocalls are not. To receive robocalls you would have had to have given prior express consent. Every robocall should have an opt-out option. Callers must disclose their name, contact number, and address at some point during the call. Most people have probably not given consent and if you've ever answered a robocall I bet you didn't hear an opt out option or any of the required information to make the call legal. Unfortunately, even though there are laws to protect us, illegal robocalls are difficult to track down.
Some exceptions to the rules are:
- Emergency Calls
- Information Calls
- Marketing Research
- Tax Exempt Nonprofits
- Emergency Calls Only
Some helpful tips:
- List your phone number with the Federal Trade Commission's Do Not Call Registry.
- Set up anonymous call rejections on your phone (*77 turns it on & *87 turns it off)
- Purchase blocking tools and services.
- If you answer a robocall that you suspect is illegal - DO NOT say anything - DO NOT push any buttons - just hang up.
